MUMBAI : In a 1990 interview, Amitabh Bachchan discussed the possibility that his children, Abhishek and Shweta Bachchan, would one day like to work in the film industry. Shweta was seventeen and Abhishek was fourteen years old at the time.

He said that neither he nor his wife, Jaya Bachchan would object if they chose to pursue careers as actors. He did also say that he would rather there be only one actor in the family himself.

Amitabh Bachchan recalled his mother's response to the question of why her children didn't follow in their father's footsteps and become poets when discussing Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta's desire to be in films. He said, “Hamare parivaar mein main pehla film kalakar hoon, aur jaisa ke meri mata ji hamesha kehti hain, jab unse poocha jata hai ke aapke bachhe aapke pati ki tarah kyun nahin bane toh woh kehti hain ke ek ghar mein ek hi kavi kaafi hai. Usi tarah, main bhi yehi kehna chahunga ke ek parivaar mein ek film kalakar kaafi hai (I am the first filmmaker in my family, and as my mother always said, when asked why her children are not like their father, she replied that one poet in a house is enough. Similarly, I would say that one actor in a family is enough).

He however added that if they do want to become actors, he would want them to struggle. He said, “Lekin agar meri beti aur beta film industry mein aana chahein, toh main chahunga ke woh bhi usi tarah apni shuruaat karein jis tarah maine ki thi. Jaise humne struggle kiya, waise hi woh bhi us dor se guzrein (If my daughter and son want to enter the film industry, I would want them to start in the same way I did, experiencing the same struggles we went through).”

Later on in life, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda each went on to establish successful careers. Alongside Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek debuted in Bollywood with the 2000 movie Refugee. Despite the lackluster box office receipts for his early movie, his career turned around in 2004 with the release of the action movie Dhoom. Later on, he became well-known in the industry after winning praise from critics for his roles in films like Yuva and Guru.

Shweta made a different decision and decided not to pursue a career in movies. She released her novel Paradise Towers and wrote for several magazines, which helped her establish a name as a writer and columnist. Even though Shweta comes from a family with strong ties to Bollywood, she has managed to pursue a career outside of the film industry.
