MUMBAI : : 2022 was not a great year for Bollywood. Many biggies failed to make a mark at the box office, and some of the films that we can call hits are Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Drishyam 2. Hopefully, the year will end with a bang with Cirkus.
Recently, IMDB's list of the top 10 Indian movies of 2022 was released and the only Hindi film to make it to the list was The Kashmir Files. The movies that have made it to the list are RRR, The Kashmir Files, K.G.F: Chapter 2, Vikram, Kantara, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Major, Sita Raman, Ponniyin Selvan: Part One, and 777 Charlie.
If we look at the IMDB’s list of the top 10 Indian movies of 2021, there were six Hindi films (both OTT and theatrical releases), but in 2022, South films have ruled the list.
We asked a few people whether this is an alarming sign for Bollywood, and here’s what they have to say…
Neha: The IMDB’s list is perfect. There were no Hindi films that left a mark this year, and Bollywood needs to up its game.
Aatish: We cannot judge Bollywood with just one unsuccessful year. Last year, Bollywood ruled IMDB’s list and this year it’s South films, so that’s fine.
Arnab: It’s not just about the box office, but Bollywood has not churned out good content this year. Even OTT releases have been avoided and they haven’t made it to IMDB's list of top 10 Indian movies of 2022. Let’s hope 2023 is better.
Kainaz: Clearly, Bollywood needs to be worried. They need to learn from South filmmakers and understand what the audience wants.
Meher: IMDB's list of top 10 Indian movies of 2022 is surely disappointing for Bollywood as only one Hindi film is on it. 2023 has some interesting films, so let’s hope the tables will turn next year.
