Bappi Lahiri appointed goodwill ambassador of UNESCO in Nepal

Not new to the Hindi film industry with he having popularized the use of synthesized disco music in Indian cinema and sung some popular songs like Bambai se aaya mera dost, Yaad aa raha hai and Oh la la among countless others, Bappi Lahiri has been named the goodwill ambassador of UNESCO Nepal’s ‘Education For All’ programme. Announcing Lahiri’s appointment the chief patron of the National Federation of Unesco Clubs, Centres and Association of Nepal, Vinod Khetawat said that he appreciated the hit music director’s gesture. “We feel Bappi Lahiri’s words will be accorded the highest importance as Nepal has always held the singer in high esteem. We are glad he accepted our proposal,” Khetawat observed. Quipped an excited Lahiri, “Every child should be given the right to education. Literacy is the foundation stone on which developing nations will grow and emerge. I am positive that my words will make a difference in the lives of millions of children.” Lahiri also nicknamed as ‘disco king’ for the hit music he had composed for the Hindi film Disco Dancer and other movies in the late 1980s, has set tunes for over 5,000 songs in over 500 films in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Assamese and Odiya.
