MUMBAI: Farida Jalal is well-known for her memorable parts in several films. However, her sweetness and simplicity have always enthralled her millions of fans. She most recently appeared in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial debut web series, as "Qudsiya Begum." She played the grandmother of Taha Shah Badusha's character, "Nawab Tajdar Baloch," quite well. Her vibe certainly made her instantly memorable.

After years of working in the film industry, Farida Jalal's career took a serious turn for the worse in 1980. Despite her limited movies, she appeared in a few short films and some of them were even uncredited. As a result, she took a hiatus before returning to the big screen in 1991 with the movie Henna. At this point in her career, she started to only receive offers for motherly roles. The fact that Farida was only in her 40s at the time is remarkable, though. She portrayed a mother figure to Salman Khan in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaaenge, Sridevi in Judaai, and Shah Rukh Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Now, in an interview with the popular news portal, Farida Jalal opened up about the same. She revealed that when she made her comeback with Henna, she played the role of Rishi Kapoor’s mother. For the unversed, Farida's performance as 'Bibi Gul' in Henna was so much appreciated that she even won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Talking about the same, she said they used to laugh on sets when Farida got to play a mother on screen at such a young age.

She added, “It was offered to me. Henna, which was my comeback film after eight years, had Rishi Kapoor. I was opposite him in Bobby. I might have been older than him by two or five years, but I played his mother in Henna. We would be laughing about this on sets.”

Farida went on to explain that Raza Murad, another actor in the movie, had questioned her when she was offered the part and had informed her that she would not even be able to get sister roles after her return. Still, she had limitations to working as a mother. Hence, if she was okay with it.

Farida shared, “One thing Raza Murad told me on the sets of Henna was, ‘Faridaji, you are coming back after 8-9 years. So, don’t think now you will get any sister roles to do. Think of it as now you are going to be put into the mother or bhabhi kind of roles.’ I said, ‘of course,’ I just wanted to act. I am not disappointed at all.”

Farida Jalal mentioned, “When I was doing Laadla, Anil would stop the shot in between… he is such a sweetheart, he would say ‘mother wali feeling hi nahi aa rahi hai yaar’. He would cut the shot saying it was all going wrong, there was this song ‘Teri Ungli Pakad Kar Chala’, and he would ask to cut the shot and say, she is too young.”
