While the entire world goes ga ga about Rakeysh Mehra having made one of the finest Indian biopics in the form of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (BMB), the master director is not quite gung ho about people referring to BMB as a biopic.
At the just concluded FICCI convention, Rakeysh was seen telling moderator Rajeev Masand that biopic is not the right word when it comes to describing movies made on personalities. "It is not a documentary. It's a feature film,” emphasised Rakesh.
When we asked him on what he would want to call movies like BMB, Rakesh said, “I would like to call them as an inspirational movie. A biopic is a wrong word because we are not portraying the entire life of the person. We are just focussing on the inspirational part. Like in BMB, the focus was on the period between 1947 to 1967. It's not a complete bio. The same is true in case of other movies made on personality. So for me the right word would be 'inspirational'.”
The director is reportedly looking to make a movie on Guru Dutt next. Though Rakesh didn't reveal his intention of making one, he spoke fondly about why Guru Dutt inspires him. “I would be fortunate if I can make a movie on Guru Dutt. He made movies in an era when the Indo-China war was happening and disillusionment was at its peak. His films truly reflected the then state of mind of the society,” said Rakesh.
Well, if Rakesh does end up making a movie on Guru Dutt, we are sure the stakes would be much higher this time around.
