MUMBAI: The illustrious RD Burman was born on June 27, 1939, making him, if he were still living today, 85 years old. RD Burman, who is regarded as one of the most recognizable composers in Indian film, left behind an impeccable legacy with a plethora of hit songs, many of which were revived in the late 1990s and early 2000s during Hindi Cinema’s indi-pop remix era.

Despite charges that he was stealing songs from the West, the composer—whose father, the legendary SD Burman, was also a legendary music director—created a number of endearing, pleasurable, and catchy melodies that were very energetic and had people tapping their feet.

Although we have already featured his most well-known and underappreciated songs in lists, this special feature has Panchamda's own renditions of seven of his most famous tunes. His peculiar nasal voice gave these recordings a certain appeal.

Let’s take a look at some of his most popular songs crooned by him.

Mehbooba O Mehbooba (Sholay)

1

Among the many fantastic tracks on the 1975 Ramesh Sippy masterwork is this item number with Helen, in which Burman screams out a funky melody while Jalal Agha lip-syncs to his voice. That being said, "Mehbooba Mehbooba" is largely based on Demis Roussos' "Say You Love Me."

Duniya Mein Logon Ko (Apna Desh)

2

This well-known song from the Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz film has a memorable beginning riff that is strongly linked to RD Burman's heritage. The song's "ha ha ha" section is very well-known. Asha Bhosle, Panchamda's wife, sung this duet with him.

Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja (Caravan)

3

Who can forget this extremely well-known song's "Monica O My Darling" section? Later on, it was the name of a black comedy on Netflix starring Rajkummar Rao and Huma Qureshi. This song has Asha Bhosle's signature "fast heaving" while Panchamda joins him on vocals once more.

Yamma Yamma (Shaan)

4

Shaan was never able to match Sholay's commercial success, but the multi-starrer's soundtrack by RD Burman was fantastic. The instantly catchy "Yamma Yamma," which he sang alongside the legendary Mohammed Rafi, is a well-known song from the movie.

Samundar Mein Nahake (Pukar)

5

In this song, a gorgeous Zeenat Aman emerges from the water, soaked, and is serenaded on the sand by the handsome Amitabh Bachchan. Here, RD Burman shines as both a performer and composer, creating an incredibly alluring song.
