Honouring him for his outstanding contribution in the field of cinema, a statue of Satyajit Ray was unveiled in Melbourne, in Australia. The statue was unveiled by award winning Australian film director Paul Cox in the presence of Indian Consul General S K Behera yesterday at Australia India Institute (AII) building.
The official statement said the unveiling of the statue of Mr Ray, who is considered one of the pioneers of the 20th century Indian cinema, is a mark of honour to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to cinema.

Others present on the occasion were AII director Amitabh Mattoo, and AII chairman Robert Johanson. The ceremony was followed by a film screening of Apur Sansar.
Satyajit Ray is known mostly for his The Apu trilogy --Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959).
