Bollywood fans, rejoice! Because here’s a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali song that’s every inch a visual treat. When the surreal Mastani (Deepika Padukone) walks in with her entourage of dancers and salutes Bajirao (Ranveer Singh), their chemistry…even when so far part...is smoking hot.
The entire gathering seems to slowly melt away as Mastani gracefully dances for her lover. Amid synchronised twirling, melodious singing and sly catching-of-glances-across-the-dance-floor lies Bhansali’s true genius.
He tells you the dynamics of the three leads, Bajirao, his wife Kashibai, and his lover (who also was his second wife) Mastani without much ado. If a two minute song can pack such a punch, imagine what the movie would offer! Deepika looks resplendent in a striking sharara, while Ranveer emotes with his eyes alone, looking every bit the regal Maratha warrior.
Due credits to be given to Priyanka Chopra aka Kashibai who looks gorgeous as a Maharashtrian mulgi. Even though she has only few minutes of screen time, her anger, jealousy and unconditional love for Bajirao are plainly visible.
Her entry may not be as grand as that of Deepika’s, but her powerful acting may definitely tip the scales in her favor. Shreya Ghoshal puts in her honey-soaked voice to good use in the song, while the set designers, costume designers and cinematographers make the sequence a fantasy.
Watch this song to go back to an era where kings and dancers fell in love in the most beautiful ways possible, where neglected wives secretly admired their husbands’ new catches and background dancers made everything look like a dream.
