Must Read! THESE are the various strategies which the TV serials resort to for boosting TRPs

Read on to view the different monotonous and creative strategies almost all TV serial makers resort to for boosting their show's TRPs...

MUMBAI: Hindi TV shows are the major source of entertainment for the country's generic mass for over 3 decades now.

In the decade of the '80s, owning a television set at home was considered as an individual family's luxury quotient. With the introduction of various audio-visual shows in both black and white and eventually, in colourised videos (by the late '80s); Indian viewers readily got hooked to their TV screens.

With the advent of different channels, various shows like popular sitcoms, soaps and even Indian superhero shows began airing on these channels which went on to be remembered as cult classics even to date.

With the advent of foreign English channels in Indian cable TV, the generic audience got divided as the youth started following these channels, while the retired folks, old people and the adult Indian women continued following these Hindi and local entertainment channels at large. Hence, observing this emerging trend, show makers dedicated themselves to the making of family-centric shows that hailed typical Indian-family ethics, different regional cultures and their traditions.

Following this trend to keep it's legacy proceeding ahead, renowned Hindi show makers like Ekta Kapoor, Rajan Shahi, Hats Off Production House amid others are at the forefront when it comes to making iconic TV shows that are remembered to date like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahiin Kissi Roz, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Sarabhai VS Sarabhai, Bade Ache Lagte Hai, Bidaai, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, etc.

Now, on being totally addicted to a particular show, viewers can't handle any sort of disruption that appears it's the show's storyline, be it on the actors' front, plot's front or the show's front in totality. Hindi shows' mainstream audience is super sensitive such that if their favourite show demands for a quick alteration based on an emergent crisis, they often fail to keep calm and boycott these shows, which eventually lead to it's dropping-off the charts.

To avoid this and ensure the longevity of the show, the show makers resort to various creative techniques that safeguard the show's abrupt and impromptu plot jumps and these techniques are being extensively used in almost all dramatic Hindi and regional shows these days.

Let's take a note of these plot-hacks one by one:

1. Time leaps

When a show's plot turns monotonous over a really long time, makers introduce time-leap twists by introducing a whole new generation for the plot's rejuvenation with the help of a new cast, while the old cast also changes by taking up transformed looks for a fresh-appeal. This helps to attract back the old audience who were longing for the change and it helps boost the TRP.

2. Death of important characters

The sudden plot twists caused by the sudden deaths of poignant characters like the protagonists/ villains helps trigger curiosity regarding the show's upcoming plot and who would be replacing the former. Hence, the number of viewers automatically elevate.

3. Post-death comeback of important characters

What's the really tricky part of the former situation is this one. After showcasing the death of an important character, many new characters star in the show, who eventually claim of replacing the former character. However, the main twist lies in their character's revelation as imposters with the unpredicted and the sudden comeback of the former character, the very factor that adds the needed spice to the show.

4. Introducing doppelgangers of important characters

A very crucial factor that affects a show's longevity it's the introduction of a character's doppelganger in the show's plot, whose getup is usually the exact opposite of the OG character. These characters are usually introduced as their OG counterpart's estranged twin, who got separated from the family at birth. In creatively rare cases, this doppelganger can arrive after the plot's time/ generation-leap as a completely different character, who may or may not have any relation with the OG character apart from their similar faces.

5. Memory loss of characters

Whenever an accident occurs in a plot, the most common injury that's highlighted with the missing character (mainly the protagonist) is full-time memory loss, followed by a time-leap. This is a very common phenomenon strategy used by the show makers. Apparently, their memory doesn't return for years, until they physically witness either their soulmate (husband) or someone who's directly linked to their past and take up the responsibility to execute their safe return.

6. Plastic surgery-cited changing of protagonist/ villain characters

Now another cliched injury an accidental plot twist resorts to is face damage, which ultimately leads to the establishment of a new actor for that character as a replacement. Usually, this replacement is kind of permanent and the new actor tries their best to fit into the character that was played by the former actor, in order to uplift and enhance the OG character's existence through the exhibition of their former characteristics. This technique is often used in case a particular original actor fails to enhance their respective role.
