MUMBAI: In the wake of a horrifying terror attack in the picturesque yet volatile region of Jammu and Kashmir, the nation is once again plunged into mourning. The assault, which took place in Pahalgam earlier this week, claimed the lives of 26 tourists — all but one of whom were Indian nationals.
The incident has not only reignited tensions between India and Pakistan but has also sent ripples of grief and fury across international borders. In an exclusive interview with TellyChakkar, actor Sagar Parekh shares his views on the tragedy, its wider implications, and the question many are now asking: should art, culture, and sport be casualties of conflict?
There’s been a growing call for punitive action, not just against the attackers, but also towards cultural and sporting ties with Pakistan. Do you believe the creative industries should be drawn into this?
When terror is exported from across the border, drawing a line becomes not just necessary it becomes moral. India has no obligation to celebrate or collaborate with those who either support or turn a blind eye to such hate. Whether its films, cricket, or any other form of cultural exchange we need to reassess. Our tolerance has been mistaken for weakness for far too long.
Following incidents like this, the drumbeat of war often grows louder. Do you think retaliation should come in the form of military action?
War isn’t the first step, and it shouldn’t be. But neither is silence an option. We need a strategic, multi-dimensional response strong, intelligent, and unrelenting. The perpetrators and their networks must be dismantled. We can’t keep turning the other cheek. Enough is enough.
Tourism in Kashmir has long been a symbol of hope and resilience. In light of this attack, do you think it’s time to pause tourism for now?
As much as it pains me to say it yes. The safety of lives must come before anything else, including economic gains. Kashmir is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but right now, beauty can’t come at the cost of blood. We must fortify security first and re-evaluate how we protect those who visit.
