MUMBAI: This is, to say, the least shocking. The Kishore Kumar episode of the ongoing Indian Idol 12 and the subsequent interview with the legend's son Amit Kumar continues to be a talking point.
Just a few days ago, a leading news channel spoke with noted singer Sunidhi Chauhan and when the topic drifted to the ongoing controversy of Indian Idol 12 because Sunidhi has judged Indian Idol both seasons 5 and 6.
The singer shocked us by saying that even she was asked to praise the contestants. "Not exactly this ki sabko karna hai but yes, we all were told (to praise). That was the basic thing. And so, I couldn't go on. I couldn't do what they wanted and I had to part ways. Hence, today, I am not judging any reality show.", she said.
But we haven't heard Neha Kakkar, Himesh Reshammiya and Vishal Dadlani even correct the contestants, leave aside judging them with constructive criticism. Not to forget Amit Kumar's volatile interview to us wherein he openly declared that he was instructed before the cameras rolled that he has to praise every participant.

What's the intention? Are the makers of Indian Idol simply trying to stretch the show? Sunidhi reasoned that there is too much competition. "I think it is done to seek attention. I think it is required to be done to hold your audience. Guess it works.".
Talking further about reality shows in general, Sunidhi said that such platforms have become a big-ticket for music aspirants. "Lekin ismein artiste ka hi nuksaan hota hai. He/she gets praise and recognition almost overnight due to his/her stories which are put out via AV and their hunger to strive for excellence diminishes. Yes, some of them still do work hard but the instant fame affects them psychologically. It's a simple case of acquiring too much too soon. Not the contestants' fault, it's simply because the name of the game is TRPs.".
"I did Dil Hai Hindustani, The Voice and Indian Idol. I could speak the truth then. Even today I would like to say what I genuinely feel. It's up to them whether they want to have me or not.", Sunidhi declared.
Sunidhi also hinted that when the contestant hears only praise about him/herself, it's bound to get confusing for him/her. "But the audience understands.", she added.
Sunidhi's heart bleeds for the genuine talent that suffers. She said that their songs are sometimes doctored. And what does she mean by 'doctored'? Do the participants not sing in one take? "They sing. But the songs/recordings of certain singers do experience a glitch sometimes which is then corrected before the show is telecast on national television.", Sunidhi explained.
