She speaks with a lisp, which I found incredibly challenging: Sherleen Dutt on her character in Shringarika

MUMBAI: Sherleen Dutt, who is known for Koi Jaye Toh Le Aaye and Honey Trap Squad, among others, was recently seen in the web show Shringarika and shared that the role was very different and quite demanding as her character had a speech defect.

She said, "The most intriguing part of Shringarika for me was the character of Maharani Dhanika. She speaks with a lisp, which I found incredibly challenging and unique. I had never played such a character before, and the idea of portraying a queen with this distinctive trait immediately caught my interest."

She was seen as Maharani Dhanikan in the series and said that she is a powerful and graceful queen and added, "But what makes her different is her speech pattern—she lisps. This contrast between her royal stature and her unique way of speaking makes her character both challenging and endearing."

She further said, "The most interesting part was finding the right balance between maintaining her strength as a queen and making sure her lisp felt natural, not forced."

She also confessed that she has done intense and bold characters before, and her role in Shringarika was completely different. She said, "The lisp added a new layer to my performance, making me conscious of my dialogue delivery in a way I had never been before. Unlike my previous roles, where the challenge was in the emotions or action, here it was about perfecting speech and maintaining consistency throughout the shoot."

However, she revealed that the character brought with it some challenges. She said, "We shot for about four months, on and off, and during that time, everyone on set started mimicking my lisp—including the makeup artist and hairstylist! They would cutely say, 'Aao Dhanika madam, aapta shringar kale.' I also found myself speaking with a lisp even off-camera just to stay in character."

"Keeping that consistency without it feeling exaggerated was the biggest challenge," Sherleen ended.
