MUMBAI: Every family longs for the ideal bahu—someone who is devoted and blends in with their surroundings. The older women in most families are the ones who look forward to their daughter-in-law's arrival because they think she will carry on their family's tradition.
Dadi Saas Swarnlata (Meena Mir), the strong matriarch of the Vyas family, is certain that they are welcome the ideal bahu—fair, graceful, and deserving of their position—in the most recent promotional video for Shemaroo Umang's upcoming show Jamuniya. However, their excitement is replaced with shock when the veil is lifted. This is Jamuniya, her dusky-skinned sister, not Ujjala, the bride they had selected.
It feels like an awful error for Jamuniya to live in a household where beauty is not only valued but commanded. The air is filled with silent rejection, but destiny has other ideas. Will she overcome these ingrained prejudices and demonstrate that her value transcends her skin tone?
"I play the head of a family that is obsessed with beauty," says actress Meena Mir, who portrays the strict matriarch of the Vyas family. Since we work in the cosmetics industry, equity is crucial to us. It is impossible for us to tolerate a bahu with dark skin because our house is white, even the walls aren't black. Although I don't personally believe in these biases, I am aware that many others do. The television program Jamuniya forces viewers to reconsider their conception of beauty and challenges this way of thinking.
Will Jamuniya succeed in a society that doesn't see past racial colour? Will she discover respect and love in unexpected places?
