Recently, in an interview, Shahi revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes story about the show's casting process, particularly how Karan Mehra wasn’t the original choice for Naitik.
In a surprising revelation, Rajan Shahi disclosed that actor Karan Tacker was initially cast for the role of Naitik. “I had signed Karan Tacker opposite Hina Khan. His costume trials were completed, and he had even signed the contract. Everything was finalised,” Shahi shared.
However, at the last moment, Tacker backed out. Shahi recounted, “The set was ready, and the promo shoot was scheduled. Everyone was trying to reach him, but he wasn’t responding. When I finally got through to him, he told me, ‘Sir, I don’t want to shoot. I think television will limit my image, and my father feels the same.’ He was genuinely scared, and even now, I joke about it.”
Despite the sudden setback, Shahi praised Tacker for his honesty, emphasising that he values truthfulness over false promises. The production team had to halt the promo shoot until a suitable replacement was found.
It was the channel that introduced Shahi to Karan Mehra, an actor who had been waiting for his big break for nearly three years. Shahi recalled, “When I met Karan Mehra, I finalised him within ten minutes. He had been sitting idle for two years, and when he got the role, he had tears in his eyes.”
Mehra quickly stepped into the role, shooting the promo and beginning his journey as Naitik within 20 days.
His portrayal was met with immense love and appreciation, and to this day, he remains one of the most cherished characters in the history of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai.
With its ever-evolving storyline and strong emotional core, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has remained an integral part of Indian television for over a decade.
