MUMBAI: Shardul Thakur has been making headlines ever since joining the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, and his performance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens added to the buzz — though not entirely for the right reasons. On Tuesday, Thakur equalled the record for the longest over in IPL history by bowling 11 deliveries in the 13th over, matching Tushar Deshpande and Mohammed Siraj, who had done the same during IPL 2023.

Adding to the drama, Thakur set an unfortunate new record by becoming the first bowler in IPL history to deliver five wides in a row. Previously, the record for most consecutive wides was four, jointly held by Jasprit Bumrah (2015), Praveen Kumar (2017), Siraj (2023), and Khaleel Ahmed (2024).
Despite the erratic over, Thakur redeemed himself by taking the crucial wicket of KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who had scored a brisk 61 off 35 balls, helping to trigger a middle-order collapse. He later removed the dangerous Andre Russell and finished with figures of 2/52 in his four overs.
Thakur, who was signed as an injury replacement for Mohsin Khan after going unsold at the IPL 2024 auction, now has 9 wickets in 5 matches this season.
