How did you prepare for your character?
I am playing Mrinalini Sarabhai in the film. I had to learn Bharatnatyam. I have learned the dance form when I was a kid. I learned approximately for four years. But it takes effort to look like a trained classical dancer like Mrinalini Sarabhai, who brought the art so nicely. She also brought awareness through her dance form. She spoke about various issues that were going on during that time. So this is the first time I am playing a character who has lived and left behind her legacy. It was amazing to play her.
She further adds, "To look like her, we arranged a teacher who used to take Zoom classes to teach the art. I would like to thank my teacher because I have never done something like this online. It was very important for me to be prepared. So I gave a lot of time to learning the art form. I read a lot about her life too."
Are you continuing to learn Bharatnatyam now that the shoot is over?
I don’t have the time to continue learning the art form because it requires so much energy and time. It's a beautiful art form. Malika Ma'am asked me to come back and continue the course. I definitely want to do it sometime. So I was looking for a 2-month crash course. If I do get the time, I will definitely take up the art form.
How was your experience of working with Ishwak and Jim?
Ishwak Singh is so hard working. I have been acting for a while now. In 2000, I featured in my first film. After working for so many years, I have never seen anyone as hardworking as Ishwak. He is constantly writing notes in his script. I thought that was interesting. He was at it day in and day out. I think that is absolutely beautiful. I love how Jim Sarbh gets into his character, He is a witty person in general. He can easily bridge the gap between reality and the project. It is amazing when you work with actors who make their work look effortless. I am so happy to just be amongst them.
