MUMBAI : Bollywood star Abhay Deol usually avoids the spotlight and recently talked about his sexuality in an interview. His bold declaration that he does not define his sexuality left fans confused and in awe. In addition, he added a disclaimer, "This might sound controversial".
In an interview with the magazine, Abhay stated that he does not believe in the Western approach towards sexuality and rather prefers the Eastern one. "I don't define my sexuality, and this might sound controversial but for me, it's not something that I think can be defined," he said.
He explained that, in contrast to the "black and white" Western conception of sexuality, the Eastern approach "recognises the whole of us".
"Why should I define myself in Western terms? I have embraced all experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don't know how to label that, I don’t want to label that," the Dev D actor stated. Additionally, Abhay said that everyone possesses both a masculine and a feminine side and thus "we are all they/them."
Additionally, Abhay said that he sees masculinity as having the capacity to make others feel comfortable around him, to be the provider and protector, and to be willing to give up control of a situation to a woman who wants to take the lead. "That's also part of my masculinity," he said.
Regarding his career, Abhay has been in several critically and commercially successful films, such as Dev.D, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Raanjhanaa, and Socha Na Tha. In Bun Tikki, he will next be seen on screen alongside Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, and Lin Laishram. He referred to the movie as his favorite and best work to date throughout the interview.
