MUMBAI: Even though they aren't exactly the outsiders in Bollywood, some celebrities nevertheless have a difficult time breaking through to experience success for the first time. The son of two former actors, one of whom achieved considerable fame, is this particular superstar. However, the boy accepted that he would grow up in poverty and that he would experience unemployment as an adult. The only thing that made him a screen icon was cinema.
Govinda was raised in poverty. He was born in 1963 to singer-actress Nirmala Devi and retired actor Aroon. His parents weren't wealthy, and none of them had achieved success in the business. Govinda was born in Virar, where the family had relocated from their Carter Road bungalow after his father lost everything in a botched home production. In a previous interview, the actor recalled how, when he was a child, he witnessed his mother barely having enough money to buy food, and that they would often have to borrow rations from the grocery store in order to survive.
Following his graduation in commerce in the 1980s, Govinda made an unsuccessful attempt to secure white collar jobs. Govinda acknowledged that it was because he didn't speak English well. Eventually, Govinda tried his hand at acting, going to several auditions for roles in TV series Mahabharat among others. Eventually, he was cast in the lead part of his debut movie, Love 86, which went on to become a hit and launch his prosperous career.
Today, Govinda is one of the most respected superstars of the Hindi film industry and has been part of films like Raja Babu, Coolie No 1, Deewana Mastana, Dulhe Raja, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and Anari No 1, among others. His net worth is around Rs 150 crores.
