Three films of different genres viz Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Ship of Theseus and The Lunchbox are among the contenders that would represent India at the Oscars next year.
But in all probability, it will be the Milkha Singh biopic that would be nominated as India’s entry to the mother of all awards going by the immense popularity of the film.
When we checked with producer-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra on the same, he said, "I was not aware of this fact. For me whatever the honourable jury decides is acceptable."
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a story of human triumph and how he (Milkha Singh) doesn't lose hope. While it is an India film at core as it applauds an Indian hero in spirit, the appeals to all universally.
Going by past records, one can observe that India has reached the top 5 position only twice with Mother India and Lagaan at the Oscars in the last 100 years of cinema. Both these films were based on human triumph.
Most filmmakers believe that this year's choice should be the Mehra-directed commercially successful and critically acclaimed Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
A final decision regarding this would be taken on 22 September.
With about 160 countries fighting the race with one film each, India’s final choice Bhaag Milkha Bhaag stands a better chance to make it in the top 5 list.
