MUMBAI: Farhan Akhtar's marriage and family experiences have had a significant impact on his life's journey. Farhan was born in the early 1970s to renowned writers Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. His parents separated in 1978 and eventually got divorced in 1985, leaving a difficult early life for him. Farhan recently disclosed that this incident had an important impact on his views towards marriage and relationships.

In an honest conversation with journalist Faye D'Souza, Farhan revealed how growing up with divorced parents affected the decision to divorce his first marriage to Adhuna Bhabani. In response to the question of whether his upbringing made going through his own divorce harder, Farhan discussed the emotional challenges. He clarified that he was well aware of the possible effects his own separation could have on his kids because he had experienced his parents' divorce.

He shared, “It was difficult. A certain aspect of it was of course that I had been through having divorced parents when I was a kid. I know what it felt like and there was a huge part of me that was like I cannot do this to my own kids. I felt that it came to a place that if Adhuna and myself spoke to them openly and honestly, and explain to them why we are taking this kind of step, that it doesnt have anything to do with them. It’s not because of them, it’s not because of anything they did, they said, or because they are here.”

He added, “This is something between two grown up people, who as friends decided that this is something that they want to do. That’s the best we could do, but it’s something that I am going to have to live with for the rest of my life. It’s never going to entire go away thinking about ‘Did they deserve this?’. It’s going to keep coming up. That’s something I guess I’ll just have to live with. The fact that it had happened to me as a kid played a huge role in how I feel about it now”.

Shakya and Akira, Farhan and Adhuna's two daughters, were born after their marriage in 2000. The couple made the decision to split up in 2016, and the following year they officially divorced, despite their best attempts to keep their family situation peaceful. Farhan revealed that the decision to divorce was not made lightly, despite the fact that he and Adhuna handled the matter honestly and transparently with their kids. He talked about his unresolved worry about whether his kids "deserved" the experience, which is still on his mind.

Farhan is presently getting ready to return to directing with "Don 3," which is scheduled for release in 2025. In this eagerly awaited movie, Ranveer Singh will play the legendary character, carrying on the 'Don' franchise tradition that Farhan successfully revived in 2006. Farhan Akhtar continues to be an adaptable and introspective person as he manages his personal and professional lives, using his history as inspiration for his present and future.
