Zaira mourned the death of Suhani Bhatnagar, her co-star in Dangal, earlier this year. She expressed her shock and her heartfelt condolences to Suhani's family.

“I’m shocked beyond words by the news of Suhani Bhatnagar’s passing. My heart goes out to her family during this incredibly difficult time. The thought of what her parents must be experiencing fills me with so much sorrow. Utterly speechless. My heartfelt condolences,” she had written on X then.

At the age of 16, Zaira debuted in Bollywood in 2016. In Nitesh Tiwari's hit sports drama Dangal, she portrayed a younger Geeta Phogat, a well-known Haryanvi wrestler and the daughter of veteran wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who was portrayed by producer-actor Aamir Khan. The movie went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films globally, starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Aparshakti Khurana, Sakshi Tanwar, and Suhani Bhatnagar.

Afterward, Zaira portrayed the main character in Advait Chandan's 2017 musical come-of-age hit, Secret Superstar. She portrayed a young Muslim girl who sings in secret, posts videos of herself singing on YouTube while donning a burqa, and refers to herself as a "secret superstar."

The movie also featured a lengthy cameo from producer Aamir and actor Meher Vij and was an enormous hit everywhere, but especially in China. Secret Superstar gathered an astounding Rs 965 crores at the box office globally, although with a low budget of just Rs 15 crores. Amidst the frequent production of high-budget films in the 500–600 crore range by Bollywood, Secret Superstar is a noteworthy illustration of how innovative and original material may exceed expectations.

At the age of just 18, Zaira called it quits on her acting career in 2019 after starring in The Sky Is Pink, directed by Shonali Bose. Alongside Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, and Rohit Saraf, she played a young girl battling a fatal illness.
