MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), currently struggling at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, have found a replacement for their injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The opener was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a hairline fracture in his elbow, a major blow to the five-time champions.

Amid speculation linking Prithvi Shaw to a CSK call-up—especially after he went unsold in the IPL mega auction—the franchise has instead opted for a young and promising talent. CSK have chosen 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre to step into Gaikwad’s shoes for the rest of the season.
Sources close to the development confirmed that Mhatre will be joining the CSK squad shortly, although he won’t be available in time for their upcoming clash against the Lucknow Super Giants. However, he is expected to be in contention for the high-stakes encounter against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20, 2025.
“Yes, Ayush Mhatre has been finalised as the replacement for Gaikwad. He’s been asked to join the squad and will be ready for selection in the April 20 game,” a source revealed.
Before his selection, Mhatre was invited for trials by CSK in Chennai, where he reportedly impressed the coaching staff with his temperament and technique. Within the Mumbai domestic circuit, Mhatre is already considered a rising star, having scored 504 runs in nine first-class matches, which includes two half-centuries and a fifty.
The move signals CSK’s intent to rebuild and inject fresh energy into their campaign as they search for momentum in the latter half of the season.
