Election 2014: The winners and losers from Bollywood
Looks like all the razzmatazz and assorted glitz and glamour drummed up by the Bollywood brigade are reaping them rich dividends. While the many who contested from the beleaguered Congress lost, almost all other actors and actresses especially from the BJP won with thumping majority trouncing political veterans in the process. We take a look at the winners and losers from Bollywood. Hema Malini: The Dream Girl is literally living a dream. Contesting from Mathura on BJP’s ticket, she defeated her opponents by a huge margin. For Hema, politics is not a new ball game as a Rajya Sabha MP she has actively overseen various social causes. It remains to be seen how effective Hema would be as a people’s representative now. Paresh Rawal – The very versatile Paresh Rawal made an extremely impressive political debut. Contesting from Ahmedabad East constituency, Paresh made easy work of winning a mind boggling 6, 33, 582 leaving his Congress opponent gasping for breath. Baburao se panga nahi lene ka. Smriti Irani – The woman who dared to take on Congress scion Rahul Gandhi in his own bastion. Smriti’s efforts were pooh-poohed by none other than Priyanka Vadra who despicably with self induced ignorance asked, ‘Smriti who? The actress may have lost out but still emerged the real winner for giving Rahul a close fight and the scare of his life. Talk of emerging winner in spite of losing! Vinod Khanna – Vinod Khanna lost last year’s Lok Sabha polls but didn’t quite lose his heart. He contested with renewed vigour and charm. In between, he also took time out to act in a movie based on coal mafia. The result of the latter may not have been too encouraging but his political victory in Gurudaspur will give him much pleasure, we are sure. The actor got a total of 4, 82,255 votes. Babul Supriyo – The lone celebrity warrior from East for BJP who delivered the goods. The singer amassed 4, 19,983 votes in a closely fought contest with Dola Sen of Mamata’s All India Trinamool Congress. Babul’s singing career in Bollywood never went afar. Here’s wishing him a long and happy innings in politics. Kirron Kher – Kirron Kher faced a tough fight not only from Pawan Kumar Bansal of Congress but also from Gul Panag of AAP. Nothing however could stop Bollywood’s favourite mother from conquering the all important Chandigarh seat with a huge tally. We are Kirron would be thanking the tireless efforts of her actor husband Anupam who made sure his wife got all the star support in this election. Shatrughan Sinha – 441980! Yes, that’s the tally Shotgun Sinha procured in Patna leaving his opponents decimated completely. We are sure Mr. Sinha has just one word to say to all his detractors – Khamosh! Moon Moon Sen – This Bengali damsel who enchanted audience with her ethereal beauty seemed to have worked her onscreen effect on her constituency as well. Result was an astounding 4, 83,455 number of votes and a thumping win for Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. Dev – Bengali star Dev proved to be another saving grace for Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress. The actor got a total of 4, 87,127. Biswajeet Ranjit Chatterjee – Unlike Dev, Biswajeet didn’t find much luck in Delhi where he contested from on TMC’s ticket. He could only manage 909 votes. Bappi Lahiri – The master of bling, Bappi Da didn’t get lucky with votes as he gets with gold in Bengal. Contesting on a BJP ticket, he came third in the race with 2, 33,214 votes. Nagma – This once-upon-a time sex symbol actress fared poorly. Contesting on a Congress ticket from Meerut, Nagma came a distant fourth with a poor tally of 42,911 votes. Mahesh Manjrekar – This talented actor was pitted against biggies like Gurudas Kamat of the Congress and Shivsena’s Chandrakant Kirtikar. Contesting from Mumbai North West for MNS, Mahesh came a distant third well below Gurudas Kamat with a total of 66, 020. Rakhi Sawant – Rakhi, whom we spoke to earlier in the day, didn’t seem dejected at all with the results. She graciously accepted her loss and vowed to return back stronger. At last count, she held an impressive 2004 votes. Not bad at all for an item girl. Prakash Jha – The director who is known for his realistic and hard hitting cinema couldn’t salvage much pride in his 2nd political innings. He lost out to BJP in Bihar’s West Champaran district. Raj Babbar – Raj Babbar is not a political novice. But he too suffered the same fate as his other Congress leaders. For a politician of his stature, Raj could only win 1, 91,188 falling well behind the winner BJP Vijay Kumar Singh who got more than 7 lakh votes. Ravi Kishan – Ravi’s intentions of helping the poor of his constituency in Jaunpur, U.P seemed honest except that he was contesting on a ticket provided by Congress that suffered the heaviest in this election. Perhaps, more than the man himself, it is the party he was fighting for that probably went against him. Ravi could only garner a meager number of 42,759 votes. Manoj Tiwari – Another Bhojpuri superstar fighting for the BJP. The result was there for all to see as Manoj scored an impressive 5, 96,125 votes from North East Delhi thereby trouncing Anand Kumar of AAP. Baichung Bhutia – The former soccer star’s first political innings ended in disappointment as he came second in Darjeeling. Contesting on TMC’s ticket, Baichung scored 290769 votes lagging well behind BJP’s candidate.
