MUMBAI: Fans of Meena Kumari have been anticipating her biopic, in which Kriti Sanon will play the actor's role and Manish Malhotra will turn director. However, it seems that the highly anticipated project has been pushed back once again.
According to sources, Malhotra has postponed his debut directing project until early 2025, even though it was originally scheduled to begin in October. The biopic has already experienced one delay. Its original scheduled release date of October 2023 was postponed by one year.
It is rumored that the writers are revisiting the script as Malhotra wants it perfected to the last detail. The source says, “The material will be vetted by multiple script doctors before it goes into filming. In a way, the delay might be good for the team. Since it’s a period drama, this allows them ample time for pre-production. Costumes are also a big part when recounting the story of one of Hindi cinema’s finest actors, and their recreation will take time. It will most likely roll in the first half of 2025.”
The film has not yet been given a title, is Sanon's first biography in her ten-year career taking inspiration from Kumari's life and legacy. She contributed to some of the most memorable films in Indian cinema history, including Baiju Bawra (1952), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), and Pakeezah (1972) popularly known as the 'Tragedy Queen' for her performances in moving films. Unfortunately, her career was tragically cut short when she passed away in 1972.
