Veteran actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay passes away

The renowned Bengali actor passed away on Sunday.

MUMBAI: Award-winning legendary actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay is no more. 

The Bengali actor, who first rose to fame playing Apu in Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar, passed away on Sunday in Kolkata following COVID-19 complications. 

He was 85. 

“We declare with heavy heart that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed his last at 12:15 pm at Belle Vue Clinic today. We pay our homage to his soul,” an official statement from the hospital read.

Chattopadhyay was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on 6th October after testing positive for Coronavirus. 

Though he later tested negative for the infection, COVID- 19 encephalopathy set in and various other complications followed. 

The legendary actor worked in films such as Charulata, Sonar Kella, Aranyer Din Ratri, Ghare Baire, among others. He was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. 

May his soul rest in peace!
