MUMBAI: Neelu Vaghela is one of the veterans of the Indian entertainment industry. The talented actress has become a household name with her awe-inspiring portrayals of various characters. Currently, she is winning hearts as Maa Hukum in Sun Neo’s show Saajha Sindoor. As we gear up to celebrate Hindi Diwas on 14th September, the actress opened up about the importance of the language, the challenges it poses, and how it has helped her career.
Neelu Vaghela shared, “Hindi is really important, especially if you're in the entertainment industry and working in the Hindi film or TV space. I feel it’s essential to know how to read and speak Hindi properly. It helps a lot in connecting with the audience because when your grammar and pronunciation are on point, people enjoy listening to you. Your voice and the way you speak make a big impact. Moreover, if someone is fluent in both Hindi and English, it’s a huge advantage in the Indian television industry; even for OTT shows or films, knowing both languages helps a lot.”
She added, “Sometimes, for a role, I need to adopt a certain tone, like I have done for my Sun Neo show Saajha Sindoor, and naturally, it requires effort. But it’s easier for me because I know Hindi, English, Rajasthani, and I understand a bit of Gujarati. Living in Mumbai, I’ve also picked up Marathi, and all these languages really help in portraying a character better.”
Lastly, when asked if she has ever faced discrimination due to language, the Saajha Sindoor actress shared, “I’ve seen it happen, though it hasn’t been an issue for me personally. But for those who aren't very comfortable with Hindi, maybe because they come from a different state, it can be tough. You can tell from their accent that they're not as fluent, and they really have to struggle. If you want to work in the Hindi industry but don't know the language well, it can be quite challenging.”
On the work front, Neelu Vaghela plays Maa Hukum, the grandmother of Gagan (played by Sahil Uppal). It is a strong and emotional role that Neelu Vaghela has been enjoying.
